Design Museum Mornings: Illuminating a Cultural Icon

February 8, 8:30 am - 10:00 am
Design Museum Mornings: Illuminating a Cultural Icon

How can light transform spaces, tell stories, and cultivate communities?

Our ability to control and manipulate light has steadily improved with time, and new technologies have allowed for ever greater creative freedom within lighting design. Crafting a story with light requires an architectural comprehension of space, and an ability to construct a narrative through an untraditional medium. Through manipulation of space, light, and time, we can create beacons that welcome, inform, and impart a tangible cultural experience from an ephemeral source.

Join Zachary Suchara, Principal at Luma Lighting Design, for a conversation on the newly-renovated Japanese Garden Cultural Village. After a $33.5 million expansion in 2017, the Japanese Garden has continued its impactful presence as a beacon for Japanese culture within North America. Explore how light was used to transform this new iconic landmark within the garden, and how theses effects radically shape the visitor’s experience.
