Design Week Portland Unveils Full Festival Schedule

Portland, Ore. – Design Week Portland, now in its fifth year, shares the complete line-up for its weeklong festival of independently organized events spanning hundreds of venues from April 21-29. For a single week each year, Portland comes alive with design. The events are accessible to the design community globally and are created to be collaborative and accessible to the public with a range of price points, including many free or low-cost options.

The two-day Main Stage conference event kicks off the city-wide festival and takes place at the renovated Revolution Hall (1300 SE Start St.) in Portland. The line-up is packed with 24 visionaries at the forefront of every design discipline from Anya Fernald, CEO of Belcampo, to Hsinming Fung and Craig Hodgetts, Principals of Hodgetts+Fung, to Marcelino J. Alverez and James Keller of Uncorked Studios and 21 others, such as:

  • Adele Naude Santos, Santos Prescott and Associates, founder of the Center for Advanced Urbanism, who will address the global affordable housing crisis and the demand for vigorous new thought to arrive at solutions.
  • Charlie Brown, Context Partners, who will speak on the design of movements, and the role each of us is most needed to play.
  • Wendy Red Star, an artist that works across disciplines to explore the intersection of Native American ideologies and colonialist structures. Together with her daughter, she will speak about intergenerational collaborative work being integral to artistic practice.

All talks will explore the role of the designer in uncharted territory. Cost for the two-day conference is $395, or $295 for students; register online at designweekportland.com.

“We’re facing a frontier in technology, in civic growth, and in political landscape,” says Tsilli Pines, the festival’s Director. “Our programs this year reflect that and ask designers to consider all the ways their work engages with these new realities.”

Design Week Portland’s headquarters grows more ambitious year over year. This April, it will be installed on the east side of the city for the first time, at The Redd (831 SE Salmon St.), a new Ecotrust development. The doors are open to the public April 24-28 from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and will highlight an interactive exhibition on the Green Loop, the proposed six-mile pedestrian and bike promenade linking the city’s east and west sides. Developed by Untitled Studio, winners of last year’s LoopPDX competition, the exhibit invites the community to come together to learn, react, discuss and further envision the project’s potential. This is being developed in close coordination with the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability and the Portland Bureau of Transportation as the Green Loop concept heads for final City Council consideration this spring.

“We’ve approached this exhibition as an incredible opportunity to use design as a platform to increase collaboration and participation in the Green Loop’s development,” said Courtney Ferris from Untitled Studio. “The exhibition will be an important catalyst for discussions and offer a visual and interactive way for participants to define a Green Loop that is responsive to their community’s needs and aspirations for the future.”

As part of Design Week Portland, Untitled Studio is developing a streetscape prototype, a large-scale interactive map, and other participatory programming. Design Week Portland organizers encourage everyone to bring their insights, curiosity, and imagination and join the conversation.

Headquarters will also act as the festival’s information hub and living room – creating a neighborhood gathering space for participants to plan their itineraries and share their experiences. The full festival schedule for 2017 is available online.

This one week in April is about exploring the process, craft and practice of design across disciplines – from graphic design and architecture, to fashion and apparel, to film, interior design, photography, industrial design and more.

Content from Design Week Portland is released monthly via The Journal, which launched in July of 2016. Each month, a video of one of the talks is released with a companion piece of unique content. Each installment is created to spark thinking and dialogue within the design community broadly.
